The client chose a sloped site surrounded by Japanese larch trees in a mountainous region of Karuizawa, Japan, (an hour commute away from Tokyo on a bullet train) as the ideal location for their home.

The Agosta house sits in a grassy meadow enclosed on three sides by forty-three acres of second-growth Douglas fir forest. The fourth side of the meadow opens to the northwest, where it overlooks rolling fields and, across Haro Strait in the distance, the Gulf Islands of British Columbia.

The nature reserve of Grimeton is part of Åkulla beech woods area, situated a couple of miles east of Varberg, close to the world heritage of Grimeton. It is a dramatic nature that rises over the flat arable lands along the seaboard.

The site with which we were presented was extremely challenging in that it was 90% covered in mature pohutukawa trees , the site being a part of a continuous belt of forest that edges the road along the beach front.

The house is situated in the heart of Ljungskogen forest, covering larger portions of the Ljunghusen residential area in Vellinge, south of Malmö. The earth is sandy and the flat ground is covered by a young pine forest. The site has therefore no views into the landscape.

The divide between dark forest and bright field, between random nature and ordered agriculture and between intimate and distant views seemed like the appropriate position to place this recently completed residence. That edge position allowed the architect to reveal all of these varied aspects of the land through a choreography of movement that the family can emotionally experience daily.
