World Architecture Festival 2011 - Category Winner: Villa
The client chose a sloped site surrounded by Japanese larch trees in a mountainous region of Karuizawa, Japan, (an hour commute away from Tokyo on a bullet train) as the ideal location for their home.

The Agosta house sits in a grassy meadow enclosed on three sides by forty-three acres of second-growth Douglas fir forest. The fourth side of the meadow opens to the northwest, where it overlooks rolling fields and, across Haro Strait in the distance, the Gulf Islands of British Columbia.

The nature reserve of Grimeton is part of Åkulla beech woods area, situated a couple of miles east of Varberg, close to the world heritage of Grimeton. It is a dramatic nature that rises over the flat arable lands along the seaboard.

The site with which we were presented was extremely challenging in that it was 90% covered in mature pohutukawa trees , the site being a part of a continuous belt of forest that edges the road along the beach front.
