The city of Belfort was planned to control the pass between the Jura and the Vosges. It’s pentagonal plan, was designed in 1687 by Vauban, completed and reorganised by the General Haxo from 1817 and on. The Fort Hatry where the sports and events arena of Belfort is located was one of the exterior bastions of this defence device.

The Montreal borough of Saint-Laurent announced the winning project of the Québec-wide architecture competition for its future sports complex. Of the four concepts proposed, the jury chose the one submitted by the team Saucier + Perrotte Architectes – Hughes Condon Marler Architects/SNC Lavalin.

Los Angeles-based practice EMERGENT Tom Wiscombe has shared its competition-winning design for the new Shenyang Civic Sports Center and 2013 National Games Arena in China's Northeast. The 123,000 sqm facility combines a sports civic center, a national games taekwondo arena and a swimming arena in an exciting ETFE bubble-clad light-weight structure.

The Ronald McDonald Centre is a special sport complex designed in a way that the disabled children can focus on what they can, everyone here is champion.
The Centre has many innovations as pools with movable floors, drowning detection system, lockers with fingerprint recognition and world’s first sports floor with LED lines.

The buildings of the Estonian University of Life Sciences are located at the North-Western edge of Tartu, bordering with Tähtvere forest park. The institution set out to integrate its campus and freshen its image with innovative architecture achieved with the help of open architectural competitions. In 2007, the competition for a new sports hall was held, followed by a competition for new auditorium annexes for the forestry building in 2008.

The Holmenkollen hill plays a significant part identifying Oslo. In the Oslo panorama its characteristic profile is a clear icon, up close its majestic steepness rises towards the sky, making heads tilt and from the top, the panorama view towards the fjord are fantastic. It is a building beyond conventions, and it is no wonder that it is one of Oslo’s most visited tourist attractions. To create a new slope on the soil of the old requires full awareness of its traditions.

In a recent competition back in September of this year, Slavko Lekic’s Sports Center in the municipality of Ulcinj, Albania takes advantage of its location with its unique position to the coastland. Lekic’s solution became an oasis in order to combine the spaciousness of the coastal beaches with the richness of the surrounding vegetation.

Lusail Iconic Stadium for Qatar 2022 is revealed at ‘Leaders in Football’ conference in London.
As the venue for Qatar’s 2022 World Cup bid, the Lusail Iconic Stadium will provide a world-class football facility for 86,250 spectators during the opening ceremony, group games and final. Reflecting Doha’s culture and heritage, the stadium is designed to be highly energy efficient and capable of performing in extreme summer climatic conditions.

The stadium has a near-circular footprint and sits on the masterplan’s primary axis, which divides the stadium precinct into two halves. Encircled by a reflective pool of water, spectators cross the ‘moat’ to enter the building via six bridges. An outer pedestrian concourse extends from the water towards an array of smaller amenity buildings and a hotel at the stadium’s perimeter.

The saddle-form roof appears to float above the concrete seating bowl, discreetly supported by a ring of arching columns. Its central section can be retracted to allow the pitch to be either open to the sky or fully covered. The concave profile of the stadium’s outer enclosure evokes the sails of a traditional dhow boat and incorporates a system of operable louvres. Inside, the seating bowl is designed to enhance the experience and atmosphere for spectators: VIP and hospitality accommodation is concentrated along the sides of the pitch to create a continuous sea of fans behind each goal.

Located in the centre of a new development to the north of Doha, with direct connections by road and a new metro line, Lusail Iconic Stadium is intended to be a catalyst for further growth and has a highly progressive environmental strategy. Parking and service areas are shaded by canopies of solar collectors, which will produce energy for the stadium when it is in use, as well as generating power for neighbouring buildings.
HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairman of the Qatar 2022 Bid, said:
The Lusail Iconic Stadium will serve as the perfect venue for the opening and final matches of the World Cup. The stadium will inspire a new generation of regional and international sports venues, incorporating environmentally friendly cooling technologies to ensure the ideal conditions for players and spectators alike. The design of the stadium provides fans with optimum views of the action in a cool and comfortable setting. Its beauty and ambition represent the pride and enthusiasm that we have displayed in our bid thus far and will continue to display until the day FIFA awards the 2022 World Cup and beyond.
