In Durban, South Africa,
the 70,000-seater
Moses Mabhida Stadium by
gmp architekten has an unique architectural feature inspired by the
South African flag. With its grand arch design, the two legs of the arch on the southern side of the stadium come together to form a single footing on the northern side, symbolizing the new unity of a once-divided country. The 70,000-seater has been specifically designed as a multi-purpose venue not only meets
FIFA requirements but can also host the
Commonwealth Games or
Olympic Games. The number will be reduced to 56,000, but can be temporarily increased to as many as 85,000 for major events.
