Our brief for this project was to build the house our client had always wanted to build – a light, modern home, using natural, timeless materials that seamlessly link indoor and outdoor spaces.

The house sits on high ground overlooking gardens with rolling countryside beyond. The main entrance is approached by a causeway of large granite slabs across a shallow pool and a dining pavilion ‘floats’ over the pool to the left of the entrance.

A dry stone wall wraps around the building at the entrance courtyard. This needed to be beautifully built, with a craftsman’s eye and skill, and we spent a lot of time searching for the right stone and the right stonemason.

Once inside, the building reveals the surrounding countryside through walls of glass and at this point the house separates, leading on one side to more formal areas, including studies and a guest suite and on the other to more relaxed family living spaces.

The formal limestone façade of the southern elevation references both the traditional English country house as well as classic modernist villas and extensive views from this elevation look out across parkland designed by Todd Longstaffe-Gowan.

The building blends into the planted landscape and many of the walls were designed to be covered, in time, by climbing plants. Similarly, the roofs are planted with heather and lavender.
