Complementing an existing 1880’s farmhouse on a working farm outside of Kansas City, Missouri, Willoughby Design Barn is utilized as an event space in connection with the client’s work as a graphic designer / business identity consultant. Aside from the industrial and agricultural functions that comprise the entire lower level of the barn, the program includes an open event space, an insulated and climate controlled utility / toilet room area, and a sleeping loft.

Farm as a synonym for food production as a basic need for survival could be used even for music production that has become a product that is interlocked throughout all segments of modern living.

The plot is located in the middle of Kojetín, close to Nový Ji?ín, on a hill with a view of the surrounding landscape. The investor’s intention was to reconstruct a former barn into a place for work and living in the first phase, and build a new family house in the vicinity in the future. The original sandstone walls and pillars from 1862 have been preserved.

Spotted this morning on KITKA, we were impressed by the personality of this Tokyo residence by Mount Fuji Architects Studio. Thematic of the project's dynamism, the buildings facade is in constant flux; appearing opaque and daunting in daylight while glowing and translucent at night. Inside, the intersection of the wood frame and the mirrored glass envelope creates an abrupt bridge between classical Japanese building and modern industrial architecture. And despite the towering concrete backdrop, the shelving integrated into the framing suggests the subtle feel of a cabin. Through a varied materials pallet -- glass, steel, wood, concrete, and stone -- the home embodies a surprising combination of austerity and warmth. See more at Mount Fuji Architects Studio.
