Los Angeles-based practice EMERGENT Tom Wiscombe has shared its competition-winning design for the new Shenyang Civic Sports Center and 2013 National Games Arena in China's Northeast. The 123,000 sqm facility combines a sports civic center, a national games taekwondo arena and a swimming arena in an exciting ETFE bubble-clad light-weight structure.

The site for this home is a steep slope corner lot in a prestigious neighborhood. Existing site conditions include neighbors to the west and north, a busy arterial below, and a residential street to the east. Though the existing residence was demolished, the previous daylight basement level and existing retaining walls established the datum for the new house.

What would eventually become known as the West Building of the National Gallery of Art, the initial portion of the museum was financed by art collector Andrew Mellon. In Nanterre, at the western extremity of the district of La Défense, this project fits into an exiguous triangular site and figures as the prow of the Valmy district. Unique and autonomous, the triangular tower unifies the Société Générale’s block, optimizing the open spaces and preserving the light and sights in the existing towers.

This garden wraps around three sides of the square, facing south, east and north. The surface has several openings, doors and shop windows, and goes along two sets of stairs that connect the square with the upper- and lower levels. These openings and irregularities creates an interesting surface as it integrates several functions and invites the visitors to come close.

The main challenge DCA (Design Crew for Architecture) faced in their proposal for a family and childhood house, located in Saint Julien en Genevois, France, was the resulting compactness from the tight ratio between the net area planned to be built and the buildable area allowed by regulations. Despite their extremely restrictive lot, they aimed for great quality spaces while instilling some generosity to create project that moves toward consistent urban characteristics.
